A sunrise photoshoot in the Netherlands - Landscape photography

A blog about photography

In recent days there has been a special phenomenon in the Netherlands, namely Sahara sand in the air. Normally this fine sand comes down with the rain, but because we have had no rain these few days, the chance of an extremely colored sunrise was therefore a lot higher than normal.

Normally you need high clouds a colorful sunrise and no low clouds and even then, it’s not garanteerd to have some colour in the sky. Like the photo below, you’ll get some colour in the sky, but not the kind of explosion you’ll expect when there is Sahara sand in the air.

The theory behind this is, when there are these sand particles are in the air and the first sunlight illuminates these sand particles, the colors, the intensity of these colours and the details in the clouds are enhanced. An extra bonus of these particals in the clouds (and the right mix of clouds) your chance of getting colour everywhere around you, is also enhanced!

The colours and light where the sun was rising

When I turned 180degrees, this is what I saw in the sky

During those 30 minutes of peak colours, I was running around like a headless chicken and shooting everything what I thought was interesting. Below are some photos I took during this morning.
